Disused East Cambridgeshire chapel gets new lease of life

Coveney Methodist Chapel was sold at auction in September for £230,000

A disused country chapel that sold at auction in September for £230,000, is to become the office for a local engineering company.

FoobarEngineering, set up eight years ago by Jamie Lowrie, has been given change of use permission by East Cambridgeshire District Council.

Coveney Methodist Church near Ely closed because of diminishing numbers but now has a new lease of life.

FooBarEngineering Ltd designs and manufactures a range of wireless sensor loggers and CAN bus sensor interfaces.

Mr Lowrie told planners the chapel contains 16 pews and the altar; there are no plaques or screens in the building.

“The walls are half boarded in pine and a bible passage is painted on the wall above the altar,” he said.

“I intend to remove the altar raised platform/rail and pews to make room for the office use.

“Although my intention is to repurpose and incorporate as many of the pews as possible for use within the building as seating in the meeting areas.”

The chapel was built in 1847.
