Inquest opens into death of prisoner who died in Peterborough hospital

He was serving his sentence at HMP Peterborough

An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death in hospital of a Wisbech man. Darren Barker, 46, was jailed in January at Cambridge Crown Court for offences including threatening to disclose private sexual photographs, theft, criminal damage and nine breaches of a non-molestation order.

In committing the offences Barker had also breached a suspended sentence, meaning 12 weeks was added to his sentence.

Barker, of Gull Road, Guyhirn, near Wisbech, was sentenced to a total of two years and seven months in prison and was also handed a 10-year restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim.

He was serving his sentence at HMP Peterborough but died in the city hospital on September 12.

At the opening of an inquest last week, it was revealed that Barker had died of pancreatic cancer.

The funeral service was held last month at Fenland Crematorium, March, with donations invited for Macmillan Cancer Support.
