A Conservative county councillor has resigned from Cambridgeshire County Council and will not seek re-election next month to East Cambridgeshire District Council where he is vice chairman.

The departure of Dan Schumann, the county councillor for Soham South and Haddenham was announced today by Tory opposition leader Steve Count.

“Sadly I have accepted his resignation,” said Cllr Count.

“For personal reasons Dan has to put his family and work commitments ahead of the ever-increasing demands on a councillor.

“I wish him and his family the best for the future.”

It means Mr Schumann will not contest his Soham South seat he won in 2019 – two years before he was elected a county councillor.

Mr Schumann, married with two children, is best known for being the founder of Via Arts, Soham, in 1997.

His first project was a performance of Bugsy Malone, which played to an audience of 400 at Beechhurst Hall, Soham Village College.

In 2008, Viva bought its first premises, a converted Methodist Chapel in Churchgate Street, Soham, where it was able to establish its own charity shop.

In 2018, Viva bought Spencer Mill in Soham and embarked on a large capital project to restore the decaying building and create a permanent home for Viva and a centre for arts, cultural and community activity for the area.
