VW Camper Van blaze in Wisbech in supermarket car park 'accidental'

A VW Camper Van caught fire in a supermarket car park.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue said the fire – which engulfed the camper van – was accidental.

Compilation of images from the camper van that caught fire in Tesco Extra car park, Wisbech, today.A spokesperson said today: "At 12.44pm on Sunday (25) crews from Wisbech, March and Thorney were called to a fire on Cromwell Road in Wisbech. 

"Firefighters arrived to find a well-developed fire involving a campervan in an underground car park, with the fire spreading to nearby cars. Wearing breathing apparatus they extinguished the fire using hose reels.

"They returned to their stations by 3pm. 

"The cause of the fire was accidental.

The fire, caught on camera by numerous people who shared photos to social media, prompted the rapid evacuation of the car park and the store.

Fire crews were soon at the scene of the fire at Tesco Extra on Cromwell Road, Wisbech.

There are no reports of injuries.

Volkswagen halted production of the iconic van – after 63 years -in 2013 for safety reasons.

The van were made in Brazil and from 2014 every vehicle produced there must have air bags and anti-lock braking systems.

Production in Germany hadn't been allowed since 1979 for similar reasons – European safety requirements were quicker off the mark to implement stricter safety measures.
