You’ll need a speed awareness course to drive through this Fen village

Drivers entering a Cambridgeshire village say conflicting road signs and markings are causing confusion.

If you drive into Murrow (a small village five miles from Wisbech) you are confronted by two options.

These are to go with the 30mph signs straddling each side of the road.

Or take note of the 40mph road marking sandwiched between both.

“Confused in Murrow! Very smart!” noted one driver on social media.

A more pragmatic view was taken by another post which said the issue had been raised in a speeding awareness course they had recently attended.

“You go with the sign on the side of the road, not the road marking,” they helpfully advised.

Another Facebook ‘lawyer’ offered his advice.

But his detailed explanation of signage, lamp posts, national speed limit, and white signs with diagonal black bars, left most even more confused.

Another thought we’d all be safe if we drove at a compromise speed of 35mph but this, too, was rejected.

As, too, was the suggestion it was 40mph for BMWs “and 30mph for bangers”.

Perhaps the most helpful explanation came from someone who said the speed limit was 40mph until last week, now it's 30mph.

“Obviously new signs been put in and markings on the road haven't been changed,” he said.

Cambridgeshire County Council has been approached for clarification.
